(February 24, 2022) – EAH Housing, an affordable housing nonprofit organization, announced today that On Broadway, an upcoming affordable housing multifamily and mixed-use development in Sacramento, was chosen as the site by California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to announce Sacramento as the first Prohousing Designation jurisdiction in the state.
“On Broadway is a prime example of what can be accomplished when federal, state, and local government and communities come together to create solutions that benefit everyone in the community,” said Laura Hall, president and chief executive officer at EAH Housing. “We are thrilled to be part of this announcement and we are grateful for all of our partners who are helping On Broadway come to fruition.”
According to HCD, Sacramento earned its Prohousing Jurisdiction Designation by its commitment to affordable housing through many innovations in their planning and building processes, and financial incentive programs. A prohousing designation will help cities work with developers to build more affordable housing by securing funding faster and more efficiently.
State and local leaders including Secretary Lourdes M. Castro Ramírez of California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency (BCSH), Director Gustavo Velasquez of HCD and Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, spoke at the event, praising Sacramento and the State’s efforts for its innovative and ambitious efforts to build more affordable housing.
“Housing insecurity and homelessness impact every corner of our state in one way or another,” said Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez at the event. “We have been fortunate to be on the receiving end of unprecedented resources to help solve our housing crisis. But for us to succeed, we need everyone working together. It’s a cause worthy of our efforts because for every unit of housing we create, there is a real story of a family whose lives will be improved immeasurably.”
Earlier this year, On Broadway, was awarded $29 million in housing and transit improvement funding from the HCD Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) program. The new development will have 140 apartments and approximately 3,500 square feet for neighborhood businesses. It will have a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, and include 37 permanent support housing units. The rents will range from 30-60% Area Median Income (AMI) for Sacramento. This funding includes $10.5 million for the local transit system to expand the Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail into Midtown Sacramento, as well as other bike and pedestrian improvements.
Construction for On Broadway is expected to begin in 2023.
