EAH Housing continues to expand free internet access for the communities we serve.
Since 2015, EAH Housing has utilized funding from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to implement infrastructure and adoption grants for Wi-Fi setup, technology training, and per-unit device programs. To date, EAH estimates collective savings in internet costs for 1,500 households to be over $50,000 monthly. Some of the programs are:
UNIVERSAL SERVICE
The CPUC administers six programs to ensure safe, reliable, affordable, and universal access to telecommunications services. These programs connect Californians to essential services such as public safety, public health, and education.
CONNECT HOME USA (CHUSA)
CHUSA is HUD’s signature digital inclusion program. In operation since 2015, the initiative has reached one hundred communities and has helped tens of thousands of HUD-assisted residents access affordable in-home internet service, devices, and the training to use them.
CALIFORNIA ADVANCED SERVICES FUND (CASF)
Provides grants and revolving loans to bridge the digital divide in unserved and underserved communities in rural and urban areas (PU Code Sec. 281). AB 1299 created an additional account under the CASF called the Broadband Public Housing Account to support projects to deploy local area networks and increase adoption rates in publicly supported housing communities. Digital Divide
EAH Housing is tackling the digital divide by providing free internet and digital literacy education to the communities we serve. Many students and adults face challenges due to a lack of high-speed internet at home, which exacerbates educational and economic inequalities.
By offering these resources, EAH Housing is ensuring that residents of all ages can develop the critical tech skills needed for future success, thereby bridging the digital divide and promoting equal opportunities for all.
