Honolulu, HI — Today EAH Housing announced that the 20th Melvin H. Boyce award for community activism in support of affordable housing will be presented to Faith Action for Community Equity. The foremost community activist organization in Hawaii, FACE leads on issues from affordable housing and homelessness, to health, jobs and public safety issues. FACE exists to allow its members to live out common, faith-based values by engaging in actions that challenge the systems that perpetuate poverty and injustice.
“We are honored to receive the Mel Boyce award for activism from EAH Housing,” said Rev. Sam Domingo, President of FACE Oahu. “Affordable housing is one of the most important issues in Hawaii. FACE has been proud to work to preserve affordable homes and fight for the rights of residents.”
Domingo continued, “The member activists of FACE make an impact on so many issues of importance to working families and seniors in Hawaii. We empower communities to make a difference, helping to give a voice to those often left out of our system of power sharing.”
“I can think of no group or individual more deserving of the Mel Boyce award than FACE,” said Mary Murtagh, President and CEO of EAH Housing. “From protecting existing affordable housing, to winning increased funding for healthcare, to helping workers all over Hawaii secure their rights, FACE has been in the vanguard on so many issues important to families, seniors and people with disabilities. The work FACE has done to help create better protections from unwarranted foreclosure has been outstanding.”
EAH Housing, now in its 45th year of developing, managing and promoting quality affordable housing in Hawaii and California, will honor FACE advocates with its annual Melvin H. Boyce Award in a ceremony this spring. The award will be presented at the Grand Opening of The Villages of Moa`e Ku in Ewa.
The Mel Boyce Memorial Award for Housing Advocacy was established in 1992. The award recognizes those who persist, often through adversity and against long odds, in housing advocacy in order to build healthy, sustainable communities.
